When will these dumpsters find a new home? They need to be removed from Coral Bay’s mangrove-fringed
shoreline to a proper recycling and transfer station area in Coral Bay up King’s Hill Rd. CBCC has been
attempting to encourage the Waste Management Authority to make this move (and spend the $ to do it) for years.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANNING GRANT:

CBCC completed a $90,000 grant from 2013- 2015 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to fill in more elements of identified watershed planning needs.

Activities: A plan outlining options for managing solid waste in an integrated manner in Coral Bay was produced, emphasizing the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle). The project included soil testing that yielded a human health and ecological risk assessment to help determine if the current open “leaking” dumpsters are posing any hazard to Coral Bay’s water resources. This project also provided ideas for expediting (and locate funding for) the removal of the dumpsters from the mangrove shoreline and building of a good reuse, recycle, and household waste disposal/transfer center in Coral Bay, called a “Convenience Center”. Our partners included the VI Waste Management Authority and the Island Green Living Association. Overview is Here

NEXT STEPS: Available grant funding to organizations like CBCC are allowing us to undertake some of the recycling and composting outreach and education recommended in the plan in 2016 & 2017. See The 4 R’s and Youth Involvement and No Straws – Plastic Free
