Would like:

A space for groups of 5 to 50 people of all ages to learn in classes and workshops. Its design should create a quiet and focused environment with appropriate amenities for classes such as:

  • Children’s after-school, home school, enrichment programs and tutoring (e.g. Boys & Girls Club, reading clubs)
  • Vocational education, GED, SAT prep, Continuing Education Units (CEUs), professional development, writing, English as a Second Language (ESL), foreign languages, computer and software programs, financial management, life skills, and junior career programs
  • Hands-on workshops (i.e. My Brother’s Workshop), home economics (e.g. sewing, cooking), gardening, composting, nutrition, fishing, first aid, babysitting, new parents, etc.
  • Yoga, martial arts, meditation, exercise techniques & cardio, Zumba, Pilates, self-defense
  • Local arts & culture, crafts with recycled materials, music, drumming, dance, painting
  • Pre-school or daycare center (permanent room / building)

Would like:

A staffed, enclosed and clean centralized solid waste convenience center that would eliminate unhealthy and unsightly dumpster areas and accommodates local waste management needs and create easy-to-reach site away from the shoreline. This facility would be located on a public road centrally accessible in Coral Bay, on 2 acres of flat land, away from the shoreline, above the tsunami inundation zone, and screened from public view. A swap shop and/or “ReSource Depot”-type facility could operate in conjunction and next to this facility.

More advanced and better waste management & recycling techniques at this facility could include, but are not limited to:

  • Composting household food waste & yard waste
  • Household furniture, appliances and electronics
  • Household goods and clothing
  • Aluminum, glass, and cardboard
  • Plastic
  • Scrap metal (small pieces)
Considerations:
This facility would not handle Construction and Demolition waste (C&D) and abandoned cars and boats, as it would not have capacity for storage/removal.

What would a preventive measure or program for decreasing abandoned cars and boats?

Would these facilities have the operational capacity for only residential waste or also commercial waste?

Is more space and a contingency plan needed for the higher concentration of construction and demolition waste from past and future hurricanes?

That has:
Proper concrete platform with oil/water and hazardous spills protection, and traffic management for incoming vehicles

A roof/structure with a solar panel farm (similar to the Montessori School’s in St. Thomas) to reduce noise and visibility of the site, produce electricity for operations and net metering, and catch water for operations and reduce stormwater pollution potential

Proper design for environmental (leakage, fly-away, pests, smell and noise) controls

Small office(s), restroom(s) with showers and kitchen for operational staff

Efficient air-conditioning/climate control

Proper lighting and electrical requirements for heavy equipment

Would like:

To be able to access Coral Bay from a variety of points from the water and have failities that support small-scale and low impact boating activities with an awareness of potential gentrification effects. These facilities could be managed by a landowner and/or boating HOA that could also help with repairing or removing abandoned and non-operational boats.
That is near:
Several small to medium-sized docks (types and sizes based on location), some that can be removed before major storms

A properly installed and maintained pump out, waste, fuel and water station

Moorings for short and long term

Identification signs with surrounding facts and information

Proper lighting and electical hook-ups

Would like:

A flat space and building that supports community efforts in growing, selling/buying/trading and learning about the following:

  • Vegetable gardens and fruit trees
  • Native plants and slope-stabilizing landscaping
  • Composting (food and yard waste and Sargassum)
  • Sustainable irrigation techniques
  • Beekeeping
  • Bulk buying power for seeds, plants and supplies

Can operate as a community garden, composting site, farmer’s market and distribution center

That has:
